Lance Kerwin was a California kid who would grow up way too quickly, and attain both the pluses and minuses and that come with that kind of childhood. Born into a family of six brothers, maybe little Lance just got lost in the shuffle. But, by his own admission, he had smoked pot by the age of six and was a heavy user by nine.
However, with his blond hair and elfin-cute looks, he was also a natural for TV and had nailed his first significant role by the age of fourteen. But the soon-to-follow steady work did not keep his bad habits at bay. Still, problems aside, he was purported to be the highest paid child actor on television in the 1970s. This courtesy of his sensitive portrayal of the title character in the still popular coming-of-age series James At 15 (1977). And following the success of Michael Landon's The Loneliest Runner (1976), where he played John Curtis a teenage bedwetter.
Sadly, all good things do come to an end. And for Lance, the beginning of his decent came in 1989 with a bust for possession of crack cocaine. Those charges were later dropped, but his drug problem was very real. Estimates of a dozen trips to rehab have never been disputed by Kerwin.
But in 1990, he moved to Hawaii - where he met his future wife and mother of his three children. There he also found salvation in Christianity. His last film role was in 1995?s Outbreak, and though he and his family have since returned to Southern California, all acting offers have been refused. These days Lance is an assistant pastor at a Christian-run rehab facility and happily living his life outside the public eye.
Lance died at the age of 62 on January 24, 2023; the cause of death has not been reported.
