Sajid Khan was a short-lived teen bubblegum idol of the 1960's and 1970's. He was the co-star of the movie, and the TV series that ran a single season called Maya (1965 & 1967) with Jay North. The premise was about two teenagers that traveled through India on the back of a friendly elephant looking for Jay North's father who was presumed to be killed by a man eating tiger. The series didn't attract much viewers, but Sajid Khan's exotic looks attracted the attentions of American's teenage girls in Tiger Beat and, most importantly, 16 Magazine's editor-in-chief Gloria Stavers.

An import from India, Sajid made teen idol press because he was one of Gloria Stavers pet projects. (Other pet projects of Gloria's included Peter Noone from "Herman's Hermits", Mark Lindsey of the Raiders, Dino, Desi and Billy, Cliff Richards and even Jim Morrison.) When Sajid gained Gloria's attention and she began to pimp him in the pages of 16 magazine, poor Jay North was left behind (Jay apparently was pretty jilted by this).

The usual teen-magazine article about Sajid was about India culture and the difference between American girls and India girls, but apparently Sajid was far more incorporated into western civilization then the magazines liked you to believe. He listened to the Beatles... not Ravi Shankar. As an idol Sajid even wrote a book and recorded an album which apparently got some airplay although none of the tracks ever hit Billboard's Top 100 (although his version of "Getting to Know You" did reach #108 on the Billboard chart).

Sajid eventually moved from LA back to India where today runs a jewelry factory. A hard person to find information about, the reason is because both his first and last name are very popular names in India. It would be the equivalent to John Smith in North America. But we did locate a web site devoted to Sajid... http://www.sajidkhan.com.

Apparently he had a lucrative career as a child and adult actor in India and made his acting debut at the age of six in his adopted father Mehboob Khan's Oscar-nominated 1957 film Mother India. He also acted in Mehboob Khan's last directorial venture Son of India in 1962.
