Will Poulter made his professional acting debut in the film Son of Rambow (2007), as the school bully Lee Carter, whose love of the cinema leads to an unexpected bond with a well-mannered schoolmate. The film premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, where its enthusiastic reception led to showings at the Toronto International Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Glasgow Film Festival and the 51st BFI London Film Festival. "Son of Rambow" went on to win Best Comedy at the UK's Empire Awards and the Audience Award at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. It also earned BAFTA nomination for writer-director Garth Jennings and four British Independent Film Award nominations, plus a Most Promising Newcomer nod for Poulter.
Poulter is a London native whose love of performing began at the age of four with a role as an elf in a local school play. Over the years, he continued acting in school productions without benefit of formal drama lessons. He was discovered by casting director Susie Figgis at the secondary school he attends, Harrodian, whose active drama department is on the local film/TV industry's radar for new talent.
As he has said in an interview, his drama teacher (Laura Lawson) encouraged his audition for the Hammer and Tongs film, Son of Rambow (2007), by knocking on his English class window and mouthing "auditions" while pointing at a flier. He was later cast as the spiky-haired delinquent "Lee Carter". Laura Lawson was also responsible for the E4 comedy sketch show, School of Comedy (2008), in which Poulter appears portraying various roles, such as "Mr. Mills" and a South African security guard. Beginning as an after-school club, "School of Comedy" (2008) involves children parodying the world of adults. The show was taken to The Edinburgh Festival Fringe and, in 2009, it was adapted into a 6-part television series for E4. The show ran for two seasons.
In 2008, Poulter was cast as "Eustace Clarence Scrubb" for the third film in the "Narnia" franchise, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010). "Dawn Treader" was filmed in Queensland, Australia. During his almost six-month stay in Australia, Poulter was accompanied by his mother and younger sister. His father was not able to stay the entire time because of work, and his older siblings were able to stay for about two weeks, until they had to return to England. Poulter noted that, though it was hard to be separated from his family, they were able to keep in touch through phone calls and emails.
In the British independent filmed called Wild Bill (2011), directed by Dexter Fletcher, Poulter plays the older son of a recently released jailed father.
He loves acting, and playing football and is good friends with his "Narnia" co-star, Ben Barnes. Poulter stated in an interview that his favorite film is Stand by Me (1986).
